Drawing of a Colorado Black Bear
There are around ten thousand black bears in the state of Colorado. They live mostly in the western two-thirds of the state. Some black bears are black, but many are blonde or even cinnamon-colored. Some people mistake these light colored black bears for grizzly bears, but there are currently no grizzlies in Colorado – the last one was reported killed in 1979. Most black bears live to be 20-25 years old in nature, and they average between 200-300 pounds. They are carnivores, but 90 percent of their diet is plants, fruits, and nuts.
